Georgette Liberatore

My abstract landscapes reflect a conflicting pull between abstraction and a need to work from nature. Landscape as subject matter fuels my natural tendency to express myself through images of trees and other natural architecture. Trees reaching upward, are likened to humankind aspiring to higher ideals and greater achievements with feet “firmly grounded”. The juxtaposition of color chords (harmonious and dissonant) are a similie for human enlightenment and freedom. It is about people becoming conscious of themselves and of their capacity as human beings to act freely. I work intuitively, with a minimum of pre-planning. When I become enamored with a color, I make it a predominant component of the painting’s design. Other colors are chosen to support it, and sometimes to “bridge it”, with a dissonant color. Major influences on my abstract work are the artists Wolf Kahn and the late Mark Rothko, and David A. Lafel, who inspired my more traditional paintings.
